Health Underwriter

The Health Underwriter is responsible forassessing medicalrisk for a PEO-sponsored medical plan.
Works within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination.
Utilizes underwriting policies and guidelines, rating rules and carrier regulations to appropriately price medical risk.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities oCollects and reviews customer-specific information such as existing group medical plans and rates, employee census, carrier history and previous claim experience to ensure submission completion and accuracy.
oWorks with Sales and support teams to ensure all collateral required for quoting is received.
Must be able to quickly and clearly explain/request missing items or discrepancies with submission.
oCalculates rates for complex group cases based on thorough analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature using underwriting methodologies.
oDevelop judgment to assess new business for master medical plans as needed while working with senior underwriters or management, to ensure a profitable book of business.
oReviews and completes all sales requests and inquiries within company established standards and policy guidelines.
oUpdates all underwriting systems as appropriate.
oProvides underwriting knowledge sharing and education to peers and/or members of the sales team.
oReview and become familiar with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes, and procedures, company business strategy and organization.
oMust be detail-oriented, but also able to switch quickly from task to task as needed.
Must be proficient in using several systems/programs at once.
oMulti-tasking skills are a necessity, with the ability to manage and prioritize several incoming requests at once in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities oAbility to use a computer, keyboard, and screens to access information necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
oAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
oAbility to write routine reports and correspondence, speak effectively with employees of the company, managers, internal and external customers and vendors.
oAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute rate, ratio, and percent.
oAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
oAbility to work under direction and work well with all areas of the Company including management and peers.
oExcellent time management, resource management and planning skills oImpeccable attention-to-detail oMust be a team player who is conscientious, reliable, discrete, confidential, and honest.
Possess a take charge professional approach with a high standard of quality, strong work ethic and assertive in a positive way.
Education & Experience oHigh School Diploma, college preferred.
oInsurance carrier underwriting experience preferred.
oPEO underwriting experience preferred.
oFamiliarity with office environment.
oProficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
