Position Overview

The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division is seeking a Geospatial Data Curator to participate in R&D that is foundationally supported by geospatial data science. This position is within the Division s Human Dynamics section and part of the National Security Science Directorate. The Human Dynamics section develops data, models, and computational approaches utilizing Earth observation, measurement, statistics, and digital traces to provide insights into human activities and interactions with the environment, from local to global scales. As the volume, complexity, and sources of our human, physical, and imagery data collections continue to grow so does the need for a talented Geospatial Data Curator to oversee these collections, provide subject matter expertise on their content, origin, purpose, limitations, and relevancy to multiple R&D programs.

The Geospatial Data Curator will work with teams of scientists, project managers, and systems/data architects to understand data requirements and workflows, identify areas for improved efficiency, organize existing collections, acquire new collections, develop and/or improve processes for managing data, respond to data inquiries, and invest in knowledge and continuity of the scientific data resources across projects. The Curator will engage in data exploration and analytics and act as an advisor regarding availability and usefulness of datasets. The Curator will also work closely with project teams to develop new data workflows, automation scripts, quality assurance and quality control approaches, and other solutions that will support national research missions.

Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

  • Address geospatial data acquisition, integrity, and harmonization challenges arising from multiple sources, scales, and spatiotemporal resolutions to meet the needs of multiple projects.
  • Provide data knowledge continuity over time across multiple projects reducing duplication of effort and increasing awareness of data requirements and availability.
  • Guide methods and analytics for data conflation and fusion to create new value-added input for R&D efforts.
  • Contribute to and lead team publications in journals, participate in conferences, and engage with other scientists and analysts in the private sector, academia, and US Government communities.

Basic Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Degrees in relevant fields such as Geography, GIScience, or data science.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and analysis including use of open source and/or commercial geospatial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS.
  • Experience with database technologies to store, analyze, and manipulate geospatial data.
  • Experience with Python, R, and/or other similar languages for data manipulation, exploration, and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of and experience with major sources of worldwide human and physical geospatial data including national and international boundaries, census, and statistics; socioeconomic indicators, land use/land cover, Earth observation; infrastructure inventories; digital traces; and event data.
  • Experience with design and/or implementation of ETL processes, to include considerations for data formats, business rules, transformation functions, validation and other diagnostics, update, and archive.
  • Experience in analyzing, researching, and interacting with large datasets.
  • Knowledge of spatial data theory and concepts
  • Excellent skills in written and verbal communication, as well as teamwork.

Preferred
Qualifications:

  • Experience in designing, developing, and applying quality control approaches to data, including services and tools.
  • Experience in leading research initiatives with colleagues or team members.
  • Demonstrated record of publications and conference participation.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
